  • Are Gas Lanterns safe to use indoors?

Gulf Coast Lanterns and The CopperSmith Lanterns are both made and certified for exterior use only.

  • Are gas lanterns safe?

Yes, all of the lanterns on our site have been tested and certified by CSA International as safe and CSA compliant. Still, the normal use of a gas lantern does result in high operating temperatures and certain cautions and safety measures do apply. Read and understand all safety and installation instructions prior to operating any gas appliance.  We do not sell gas lanterns for use inside.

  • How do I maintain my copper lantern?

Gas lanterns should have their burner tips cleaned once a year.  Run a piece of dental floss through the slot to clear any carbon build-up.  Clean the glass and wipe the lantern down.  That should be sufficient.

  • Do Gas Lanterns blow out?

The design and construction of Copper fixtures minimizes the potential for the flame to blow out, however, under certain circumstances the possibility for a blowout may exist.

Make sure the light fixture is plumbed to a dedicated gas supply with properly regulated gas pressure.

Check for proper closure of the door panel and that all glass panels are intact and properly seated within the cage assembly of the light fixture.

When lit, the shutoff valve at the base of the burner assembly should be set according to the instructions included with each lantern to ensure proper flame height.  Some burners are equiped with a height adjustment screw that can only be changed with the tool supplied while other can be regulated with the valve handle located near the bottom of the valve asssembly.

If blowouts persist, our service department is always available to troubleshoot and resolve any problems.  Wind Guards are available as an option to any lantern and will usually solve a frequent blow out problem.

Electronic Igniters when installed on the lantern will re-light the lantern if blown out by the wind.

  • How many BTUs does a open flame gas lantern use?

BTU varies by the flame height and number of burners.  A small candle flame will use about 600 while a larger 3.5" flame may use 1500-2000.  Ratings vary and you can see a chart on BTU and Fame Settings    on this web site.

  • Will my copper lantern turn green?

When copper oxidizes it produces copper oxide which is green in color. This process is commonly referred to as patina. Under most conditions, copper fixtures will simply darken with age like an old penny.  The amount of patina green that develops depends on the location of the installation and the composition of the air it is exposed to.   The closer the lantern is to salt water, the quicker the process develops.  This in very dry climates may see little change over many years.

  • Will my copper lantern rust?

Copper is one of the most resilient materials found in nature and is capable of with standing the harshest of environments without rusting.  All of our lanterns are constructed with 20-22 oz. high grade copper and fitted with solid brass components to provide a lifetime of maintenance free service.  For coastal and salt water environments we offer aluminum mountings and accessories using all copper and brass,  aluminum and copper.  Flush mount lanterns have all copper construction and brass construction.   All copper construction is available as a custom option.  Be aware that all copper construction, especially when in contact with stucco,  can produce stains as rain washes the developing patina off the lanterns backplate and it runs down the wall.

  • Can I use propane gas in my lantern?

Yes, we offer propane burners in both Gulf Coast lanterns and The Coppersmith Lanterns on this site.  Simply select Propane Gas in the power options.

  • Do you sell parts to convert my electric lantern to gas?

No, we sell only certified Gas and Electric Lanterns, not parts for other lanterns.  Gas lanterns must be made to higher standard than standard electric lanterns to withstand the temperatures produced by the open gas flame.  It is dangerous to covert most electric lights to gas.

  • Do you have a Showroom where we can see the lanterns?

Yes, we have a showroom located in Covington, La. at 401 N Columbia Street with apx 100 lanterns on display.
